Unofficial Election Results
The timeliness of reporting election results in Johnson County is dependent on three main factors:
- Number of voters in line when the polls close at 7:00 p.m.
- Number of voting machines reporting results
- Number of candidates and contests on the ballot.
The first unofficial partial result summary is usually posted by 7:30 p.m. This summary will include all advance votes received through the mail and cast in person.
As results come back from the polling places, additional partial result files will be shared on our website. The final unofficial results will be posted when the final polling place results have returned to the election office. These “Final Unofficial” results will remain unofficial until the canvass.
Candidates and interested parties have several options for receiving unofficial election results:
- View the results on the Election Office website
- Like the Johnson County Election Office on Facebook and follow us on Twitter (@jocoelection)
- Receive the results in person at the Election Office
Official Final Election Results
The Board of Canvassers canvass the votes following the election at the Election Office, 2101 E. Kansas City Road. The Board of Canvassers determine the validity of any provisional or challenged ballots.
Following the processing of the valid ballots, the official vote summary is certified by the Board of Canvassers as the official final election results.
Post-Election Audit
Kansas law requires county election officials to conduct a manual audit of each vote cast in one percent of the county’s precincts. The precincts and contests to be audited will be randomly selected after the election. Johnson County has over 580 total precincts, which means six (6) precincts will be randomly selected and audited.
In even-numbered gubernatorial election years, the law requires auditing of one federal contest, one statewide contest, one state legislative contest, and one county contest randomly selected after the election.
In even-numbered presidential election years, the law requires auditing of one federal contest, one state legislative contest, and one county contest randomly selected after the election.
The law requires the audit to take place at least 48 hours before the Board of Canvassers meets to certify the election results. The audit will be performed by trained, bipartisan members of a sworn election board selected by the Election Commissioner.
The results of the audit will be compared to the unofficial results from election day, and a report will be submitted to the Election Commissioner and Secretary of State before the Board of County Canvassers meets. In the event of a discrepancy between the audited results and unofficial results that cannot be resolved, the Election Commissioner or Secretary of State is authorized to require an audit of additional precincts.
Members of the public, candidates and poll agents are welcome to attend and observe the precinct selection or audit, but may not participate in the proceedings.
All post-election audit events take place at the Johnson County Election Office (2101 E Kansas City Road, Olathe) unless otherwise noted. The time and date of the audit are posted on this website prior to an election.
