Election Workers

The Johnson County Election Office has the need for hundreds of workers and volunteers, ready to help make advance in-person voting and election day successful.

We are constantly needing more civic-minded individuals to serve their community as election workers. If you would like to become an election worker please sign-up and volunteer.

Election Worker applications will be accepted and information placed in our database. Applicants will be contacted prior to an election when new workers are needed for that election.

If you have already placed an application with us, the application will remain in our database for future elections. You do not need to reapply.

For the November 2024 General Election:

  • Training sessions start on Saturday, October 5 and continues through Friday, November 1 - with a number of different times to choose from each day.
  • In-person training sessions will be held at the K-State Olathe campus, located at 22201 W. Innovation Drive
  • In person advance voting starts on October 19 and continues every day (except Sundays) through Monday, November 4.
  • Election day is Tuesday, November 5.  Polling sites open from 6:00 am to 7:00 pm

To Be an Election Worker

Qualifications

  • Resident of Johnson County, Kansas
  • Voter registration is current and up to date
  • Never been convicted of a crime that would affect the ability to be an election worker
  • 18 years of age; or
  • At least 16 years of age with approval and recommendation from the student's school

We are looking for workers who take pride in their work, are patient, take direction well, and pay attention to detail.

Election Workers are required...

  • To complete an Election Worker Application
  • To submit a copy of a Social Security card and Driver's License with the worker's current name
  • To complete mandatory training prior to every election.

Compensation

All election workers are compensated  for completing training and for working.  Individuals who do not desire to receive compensation, please complete the below stipend waiver form.

A copy of a worker's Social Security card and Driver’s License for the county's payroll department is required to be submitted before training and working assignments are made.

  • Supervising Judges: $200 a day + transportation stipend
  • Election Worker Clerks: $150 a day
  • Training Session: $25 per session completed; $50 maximum total

Hours

Election Day:

  • 2024 November Presidential General Election - Polls open 6:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Election workers will report to their assigned location at 5:00 am - an hour prior to opening of a polling site.
  • Following the close of the polls at 7:00 p.m., all election workers assist the Supervising Judge in closing down the polling site.

Advance Voting:

  • Mon thru Friday 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.
  • Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
  • Election workers will typically report to their assigned location an hour prior to opening of a polling site.
  • Following the close of the polls, election workers assist the Supervising Judge in closing down the polling site.

Job Duties

Supervising Judges

  • The Supervising Judge is the person in charge of the polling place and is responsible for the operation of the polling place.
  • The Supervising Judge attends a mandatory training specifically for supervisors, and attends other required training sessions.
  • On the Monday preceding the election, the Supervising Judge picks up election supplies from the Election Office, calls the assigned election workers to confirm that each one will report on Election Day at the designated time, and notifies the Election Office of any prospective absences.
  • On Election Day, the Supervising Judge assigns the duties to the Election Board. All election workers arrange the polling place to receive voters and post all signs. The Supervising Judge officially opens the polls and manages the processing of voters.
  • On Election Night, the Supervising Judge is in charge of closing down the polling location and works to promptly deliver election materials to designated locations for the Johnson  County Elections office.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 20 pounds.

  • Must be able to stand, walk, and move for extended periods (up to one hour) without a break.

Election Worker Clerks

  • Election Worker Clerks assist the Supervising Judge and share responsibility for the operation of the polling site.
  • They greet voters, assist to check-in voters, assure the proper ballot is being issued, and assist voters with general questions.
  • Stand for extended periods, up to one hour at a time, while performing tasks such as guiding and assisting voters in the polling location.
  • Following the close of the polls at 7:00 p.m., all workers assist the Supervising Judge in closing the polling site.
